Lies and deceit of Pakistan Army!

Pakistan Army: beware and be aware!
-          Jo ek galti kare, woh anjan- Jo do bar galti kare woh Shaitaan- aur jo galti pe galti kare woh Pakistan!

The Islamic army of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is unlike any standing regular army, in the world. The motto of Pakistan Army, Iman, Taqwa and Jihad fi Sabilillah means- faith, piety and war in the name of God. The Pakistan army neither has faith in its people- nor are the officer corps known to be a pious lot and over the years has time and again hit out at India- its arch enemy! Throughout age and evolution of Pakistan itself, from 1947 till date, Pakistan army has come to be singularly “the most important pillar of Pakistan state!”

As with most nascent countries at the time of birth, suffering from teething issues, Pakistan had to suffer its share of trouble, tribulations and trauma of various social and political miscarriages. With time, instead of healing and progressing towards a better life for its citizen and gentry, Pakistan descended into a regressive cauldron of “long term suffering” for the majority of its people, the army and ruling class being an exception.

At the outset of its existence, Pakistan army became all supreme with the Gen Muhammad Ayub Khan’s 1958 coup. The Pakistan army was here to stay and continues to this day- in some form have a strong ‘iron-grip’ hold over the state, or the other! With Ayub’s coup – Pakistan Army became all powerful in all domestic and international matters of state policy- even when, whenever under a civilian government- if at all, ever!

With coming and going of successive military rulers- from Ayub, Yahya, and Zia and till Musharraf in the recent past- Pakistan army’s General Head Quarters at Rawalpindi truly, became the “nodal power centre” of the Pakistan state! Accept it or deny it, or even call it a propaganda theory- fact remains, Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani- Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army is power behind the man at Aiwan- e- Sadr, President Asif Ali Zardari and his Prime Minister- Yousaf Raza Gilani! The power and hold of the Pakistan Army over its people can be gauged from the fact that, a common Pakistani – will think twice before opening his mouth against anything to do with the Pakistan army and it’s all powerful Inter Service Intelligence. Yhose who do tend to speak up or try to be vocal- are either picked up, tortured or killed as with the case of noted journalist, Najam Sethi in the 90’s and as recently, Syed Saleem Shahzad the journalist who was picked up by the Inter Service Intelligence, tortured and killed, in cold blood.

The lavish life styles of officer cadre of Pakistan army are legendary. It emanates from the fact that, the Pak army has an equal share in most business and financial enterprises and their dealings thereof within and outside the conuntry. Organisations like the ‘Fouji foundation and Army Wives Welfare Organisation” are conglomerates unto themselves- with budgetary allocations from the state running into millions. The Pakistan army have dedicated teams of officers and ex-servicemen who run ‘fouji’ welfare centres, businesses, enterprises and engaged in trade on behalf of the “army”. With interests in stock markets, agriculture, IT, textile and all other forms of economic diversification, the Pakistan armed forces and its intelligence agencies have its fingers dipped in every pie of state and civil life of the state of Pakistan.

The Corps Commanders of Pakistan are almost a law unto themselves- martial rule or civilian rule, notwithstanding. The Corps cdrs are so powerful within their jurisdictions- they get protocol equivalent to Chief Minister or Governors of provinces and their advice are sought from time to time by the civilian sat-raps as and when the situation arises! The commanders of Pakistan armed forces and army in particular lead a life of extravagance, which is not known to many a standing army, in the region or of a similar “economy at par with Pakistan’s”!

Every state in the world has its own trained, armed professionals- who call themselves its army. But Pakistan, is the only state of which the army over rides the powers of an elected civilian govt and holds sway over its masses, irrespective, of the army at the helm or not.

As a dwindling economy, post break away of Bangladesh, Pakistan’s state of affairs took a beating and it survived by virtue of aiding the United States and Central intelligence, at the mercy of providing for and training “mujahedeen’s” by the American ‘petrol’ dollar via CIA and Saudi Arabia. It was during this time, with Gen Zia ul Haq, at the helm as President and COAS did winds of fortune began to blow kindly upon Pakistan in general and Pakistan army, in particular.

Apart from training the mujahedeen’s in the 80’s against the USSR, Pakistan army, slowly and steadily started diverting funds and hardware to train Indian separatists into militants/terrorists and create insurgency situations inside Indian state- which in turn spread to the Indian hinterland in form of terrorism towards the Indian people. This is how, after suffering ignominious defeat at the hands of Indian forces in each conflict- viz 1947, 1965, 1971- the Pakistan army devised an unique, ‘5 point strategy to counter the Indian state’s war machine, from within.

The ‘badla of ikkattar’ – or “revenge of 1971”, as it’s known in circles- within Pakistan army and state- is an ‘unofficial’ official doctrine of ‘breaking up India’- which as per plan, is working very well for Pakistani’s and Pak armed forces in particular.

1.      Funding militant/terror groups inside the state of Jammu and Kashmir - continues unabated till date.
2.      Funding moderate separatist groups and people inside J&K to speak out and fight against the Government of India and the Indian Army - continues till date.
3.      Funding militant and terror modules inside Indian hinterland by using religion as a tool to bring in educated, moderate followers of Islam –turn to violence and extremist militant against the Indian state – continues till date.
4.      Funding groups of civil society members within India and giving them intellectual platforms outside India to propagate Pakistan propaganda such as – “Aman ki Asha”- is the way forward in order to divide Indian society down to the middle.
5.      Pakistan army’s bent towards India’s long time- rival, China to put India in a corner, in order to move in ‘at will’!

In case you wonder, where the money is coming from- Pakistan has plenty of access to huge amount of narcotics money, dollars which came in during the Zia and Pervez years and that’s the basis of its funding terror, via a fledging black economy! With change of fortune, since Zia days and ‘black-money’ being no problem for the Pakistan army- it has systematically been able to put its above mentioned plan into action and continues unabated since. In recent time, with Gen Pervez Musharraf at the helm of Pakistan- dollar has not stopped for Pak army- sanctions, following nuclear test and dwindling white money, notwithstanding. Pakistan army-navy-air force and its intelligence agencies have never felt short of money, even at the peril of its countrymen dying, day in and day out because of their follies and internal strife.

Pakistan army has always been financially stronger than an average Pakistani and it still is. With no dearth of money and a ‘ever-helpful’ Chinese PLA to the rescue- following the void created by Americans slowly and steadily giving up on its “best friend in South Asia” and “Pakistan not being the friend it used to be”... Pakistan, like always will “muddle out”. Though, hope not it.

What needs to be seen- analysed and understood-in the present scheme of things is Pakistan’s duplicity against India will never cease till it sees to it – “India balkanised” at all and any cost! What we Indians need to understand and realise is – “Pakistan army is the Pakistan state itself” and it can’t be trusted, so long, Pakistan continues- its fake, pseudo charade of- Aman ki Asha via its stooges in Pakistan civil society and ex military cut outs! This neo-modern day treachery, by sections of our (Indian) own – civil and ex military society is going to cost us the very land we fought for- to achieve and sustain from imperial rulers.

Cross-border interactions- mushaira’s- Aman ki Asha- people to people contact is always beneficial- but not at the hype it is happening and this very –Aman ki Asha will turn to nirasha once the velvet gloves of ‘Pakistan army’ and its ‘best-friend’ “PLA” come out to play with us. The day is not very far and the writing is on the wall. If only we can get rid of our blinkers and smell the stale coffee brewing across!

Sino-Pakistan: Best friends forever!

The art of war:- to win a war by not firing a single bullet!

In the autumn of 1962- 20th October, 1962 the Chinese PLA over ran Indian army posts in the then North Eastern Frontier Agency (NEFA) sector. The Indo-Sino conflict as it’s known to all and sundry lasted roughly a month and half- with vast swathes of Indian Territory being taken over by the Chinese. Debated, studied, analysed, scrutinised and read the world over at military institutes, strategic affairs think-tanks and discussed by intelligentsia- conflict of 1962- was the single most ‘water shed’ moment for the Indian military machine- post 1947, when newly independent India, came into being.

The conflict- as aggressive manoeuvre by the Chinese was half expected- by the Indian political leadership in New Delhi- in view of the ‘pseudo bonhomie’ created by the ‘powers that be’ in Beijing and New Delhi! Divided by ideology, but joined at the hip over socialist ideals- of Nehru and the political leadership of New Delhi, reports of Chinese PLA build-up along India’s borders with China- in the NEFA and J&K sectors were dismissed, as mere paranoia. As such the political leadership’s view of things at hand from top- cost us dearly and how- history shows the way!

The age old adage – “enemies- enemy is my best friend” holds true for life as we know it. At time of independence from the British Empire- the land mass- known as imperial India- was divided into India and Pakistan. With almost 564+ princely states in between the two independent states- the choice was- to join either of the two nations. Barring, princely state of Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad (which eventually saw a police action to be acceded) chose to be remain independent of either country and the other states did what they felt best and re wrote their history in keeping with time. Jammu and Kashmir, as an independent state wasn’t acceptable to Mohammad Ali Jinnah as it was to the Indians. As is widely known, the state was invaded by Pakistan – sending in tribals as invaders to begin with- followed by elements of  newly raised Pakistan army, who till a few months back were very much part of the larger British Indian Army!

The futile effort of Jinnah- to annexe Jammu and Kashmir entirely, as it was to be so in due course became the single most ‘bone of contention’ between Indian and Pakistan and it has been the “only objective” of successive Pakistan government over the years to get “Kashmir” – by hook or crook. Though Pakistan was able to rest a sizebale portion of the state- the areas known as Gilgit-Baltistant (Northern Areas) and the Pakistan occupied valley of Kashmir Z(known to Pakistanis as Azad Kashmir) With the dismemberment of its eastern wing- (present day Bangladesh), Pakistan added –‘badla of 71’ as another of its objective of spite and hatred against India, the Indian people and their state.

Keeping up with time and changing matrix of global geo-politics, in 1964- Pakistan handed over the region of Gilgit-Baltistan in Northern areas- to the Chinese and arranged a direct link up between the two nations via the “old silk-route” along the Karakoram highway. If one is to go by WM Dobell’s “Ramification of the China-Pakistan border treaty of 1964” – the geo-strategic goals of the two state holds true and in tune to this day, as it did, then.

In due course of time, the Sino-Pak friendship has grown from strength to strength – bringing in traditional India friendly states like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal into the fold and tightening the noose around India by a creating a “string of pearls!”

With heavy duty investments in development of core strategic and national interests inside Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar- by China and even Pakistan- India tends to lose ground and be in a ‘tight spot’ of unimaginable magnitude.

The writing is clear from Kashmir to Kanyakumari- Sino-Pak friendship is going to spell doom for India and how? Let us examine the present day strategic and tactical situation on ground and elsewhere, viz China- Pakistan- Sri Lanka- Bangladesh- Myanmar- Nepal and India.
In the regional scheme of things around SAARC region- without China, India is a ‘regional super power’! But, for how long will this delusion of false power remain?

As of today, Chinese presence in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal is twice over what India has to offer to these ‘regional minnows’. For long, India was the “fairy-god mother” to Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Helping them out in their times of need as well as in defence of their land. Be it the “Bangladesh liberation war”, the “war against LTTE”, in Sri Lanka (IPKF-87) or for that matter sending in Indian Air Force to get King Mahendra out of Nepal in 1951 after the Rana Prime Ministers staged a coup against the king from Nepal! India has been benevolent in “being there” for one and all. But things are changing and fast! With internal strife in our own hinterland- and political strife between regional sat-raps India is losing its sheen – faster than we can blink an eye! In above scheme of things, it’s China which is closing in and at the pace- India is losing the grip!

With India banking out and China moving in- another silent yet potent winner is, Pakistan. With immense help from China – in Gilgit- Baltistan region to develop power generation and roadways, long term infrastructure projects by Chinese engineers are on in full swing and in aid to the infrastructure and development projects- the Chinese PLA is stationed –not just in defence of the Chinese workers, but to act as a buffer – in event of an Indian attack!

Things are not getting any better for Indians. Recent report of – Chinese and Pakistan army engaged in “war game exercise” near India’s border plains- makes matters worse and brings it to prominence. The Pakistan army today is over stretched and in a mess on the outside- Losing prestige in the global perspective of things- due to killing of Osama bin Laden inside Pakistan, the need for the soldiers to fight their own (in FATA and NWFP) on orders from America. These things make the soldier question his loyalty and tend to frustrate the officer cadre at times. Let us examine the given situation of the rebels/insurgents and militants the Pakistan army has been engaged in fighting with, for the last 2 to 3 years on its western and north western end.

Prior to 2009- the Pakistan army fielded only one armoured and infantry brigade group- at Khuzdar and Turbat, respectively in Balochistan and 2 divisions (33 inf and 41 inf HQ at Quetta) under the 12 Corps at Quetta! It was around 2009, with pressure from United States to engage militants inside Pakistan, who crossed over from Afghanistan, did Pakistan army move a ‘strike’ division level formation from its eastern border with India to fight Al Qaeda and home-grown terror outfits such as TTP in its ‘wild west’. Today Pak army fields 4 “strike division” in areas surrounding NWFP and FATA:-
According to OrBat of Pakistan Army- it consist of 11 Corps formations, including which are 2 armoured divisions – 2 mechanised divisions – 1 artillery divisions -19 infantry divisions- numerous Air Defence, independent artillery-armoured and infantry brigade group components amongst a fully fledged strategic command for nuclear arsenal delivery systems! In view of the information available- prior to 2008-09, Pakistan army fielded the entire strike components of the two strike corps on its eastern border with India- concentration of troops of the Pak army- is as peculiar and complicated as its psyche- one may have one corps HQ in one city along with div HQ of another corps in the same! It is as peculiar as it gets and not many armies of the world field their ‘troop concentration’ in such overcrowded and mismatched pattern- unless the paranoia of Generals and strategic policy is hounded by one and one country only!

Post 2009 scenario of Pakistan- as of today- Pakistan army looks over stretched across the line and over burdened with handling internal security crisis with 4 strike divisions missing from its assigned area of jurisdiction/Head Quarters -
37th Div- (of 1 [Strike] Corps HQ at Gujranwala, presently in Mingora) –
40th Div- (of 2 [Strike] Corps HQ at Okara, presently in Dera Ismail Khan) – lower NWFP
and two divisions –
19th Div-HQ Jhelum and
23rd Div- HQ Mangla of the 10 Corps, Pindi is located at Shangla- in Lower Swat!

It gets worse- with reports of one mechanised bde on the move towards the west (unconfirmed) and a surging crisis in Balochistan- the Pakistan army is likely to have its hands full, for time to come.

In this situation- it still doesn’t give India time to breathe- at a time when Aman ki Asha propaganda of ISI/Pakistan civil-society and Pakistan Army seems to turn the tide of India’s foreign policy and ‘civil society’ thinking tilt towards ‘overzealous, over the top Pro-Pakistan’ attitude- it’s not paranoia but caution towards ‘perpetual aggressor’ which per force makes one sit and think- “are we doing the right thing”?- and rightly so, within hours of the new Foreign Minister of Pakistan concluding her (what’s her name?) visit to New Delhi- Indian society seems to only care for and go gaga over the lady in question’s- so called “film star looks” and expensive hand bags and what not! But why (one is forced to ask) did the Pak Minister come? Was it to show off her bags or talk serious shop? What happened? Did our leaders even talk? Or were they so enamoured of her looks- that her ‘magic and charm’ worked to benefit Pakistan army, (real rulers)- in order to divert the attention of naive and gullible Indians from the real things at hand!
Also, one should not forget, to what happened just days after the ministerial visit-
According to highly placed sources, news of which have been played down by the ‘Indian media’, so as to not disturb the Paki agenda of peace process to dismember India-

“A team of Pakistan Army’s- Border Action Team- a specialised covert unit- raided an Indian post –inside Indian territory and in an ensuing carnage- killed and beheaded 4/5 Indian jawans of a forward post- while jawans were in middle of ‘change-of-guard’!” This brutal covert action cannot be justified under any circumstances- because; information has reached the public. It could or in secret, would have been justified- had information of such an action not been heard of! But, it’s for all to see and the duplicity of the ‘enemy’ is on the wall- literally!
Post- covert action of the Paki army and the insensitivity of the Indian media thereof- news of Chinese and Pakistan army engaged in field exercise – as close to 25 kilometres from border with India goes to prove that Pakistan and Pakistan army- won’t give up and now, Chinese PLA is what we have to deal with – in the event of Pakistan army’s over stretched resources!

Lastly, even if Indian army brass seems seriously gung ho about tackling Pakistani sat raps working against Indian interests- well, let’s hope we watch our six o’ clock- because Pakistan is prepared, has the will and the backing of its Best Friend, Beijing!

As for us- we might be prepared but we lack ‘will’ and our leaders are meek and ‘intelligentsia have been bought over, by ISI! – A la Ghulam Nabi Fai and likes of Dileep Padgaonkar- Radha Kumar so called interlocutor between the Government of India and separatists from J&K among others!

Pakistan- the despicable devil

Pakistan and its history of duplicity!

On 14th August 1947, Pakistan was carved out of the western and eastern landmass of India. West Pakistan included the areas of Sindh, Baloch, Western Panjab and the North West Frontier Province (Khyber Pakhtunkwha) bordering Afghanistan. On the east it received the areas of East Bengal (Noakhali, Jessore, Chittagong, Tangail and Dacca among others). The bane of Pakistan’s existence at the very outset was the Indian landmass of eastern Punjab to Bengal (a distance of over 3000 miles) which divided Pakistan, right down the middle. Secondly, the language barrier between the provinces of East and West Pakistan was far great to be missed which led to the 1971 ‘Bengali uprising’ following which, resulted in the “71 Bangladesh liberation” war with India. Pakistan felt deceived with this arrangement, which in return made a dash towards the independent (at that time) princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The move of sending in armed ‘intruders’ into Jammu and Kashmir to take it by force and annex it with the state of Pakistan was under the operational command of Maj Gen Akbar Khan of the newly raised Pakistan army, with Mohammad Ali Jinnah being privy to the operational plans.

Jinnah’s “grand plan” to take Kashmir by force was executed blatantly, and in violation of all rules of war - using mostly “tribal’s” with elements of Pakistan army regulars. Hence, at the very outset of its existence- Pakistan army and Pakistan itself as a state mastered the ‘art of deception’ in classic art of ‘making the other believe- it will do what it says and in reality do a complete opposite. Diversion and deception became “state policy”. Within three months of its existence and still operationally under developed, as an army - Pakistan army’s execution of Operation Gibraltar was swift (1947-48 Kashmir war, as the operation was named). Only a few top generals were kept in the loop barring the British officers in command of GHQ, Rawalpindi. Operation Gibraltar was the brain child of Maj Gen Akbar Khan, who later, was found guilty as a co-conspirator in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case, 1951 (to overthrow the government of Liaqat Ali Khan) and Court Martialled. The plan was simple and at the outset, worked brilliantly in favour of Pakistan. Instead of using ‘regular troops’ to be sent in to Kashmir, armed tribal’s from NWFP were sent in by road – taking one village at a time- with Srinagar being the ‘ultimate objective’. With news of the invasion reaching, Maharaja Hari Singh, the Hindu ruler of J&K- decided to act and sought help from New Delhi.

In his book- ‘Slender Was The thread’ –Lt Gen LP Sen, (commanded 161 (i) brigade group in Uri during Kashmir war) goes in detail to explain the circumstances which led to the Indian Army being airlifted into Srinagar on 27th October, 1947. The very first unit to reach Kashmir valley was the 1st Sikh (4th Mech) under Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai- who fell to bullets while defending Srinagar in days to come. In the scheme of things during the war- the diabolical deception of Pakistan was exposed very early in the life of Pakistan’s existence, thus, “diversion, deception, subversion and deceit being made “(unofficial) official policy of Pakistan” in due course of time. With passage of time and changing course of contemporary world scenario – deception of Pakistan got deep rooted within its psyche of governance and daily life.
In 1958, at a nascent age and time of the country’s life, Pakistan, faced its first among many ‘military coup’, orchestrated by its first Pakistani army chief – Gen. Mohammad Ayub Khan! Ayub belonged to a generation of ‘anglicised Sandhurst trained Pakistani officers’ – fought alongside the British Indian Army in World War II, opting for Pakistan at the time of independence. His ‘coup’ to power in 1958 polarised Pakistan Army to great position of power within Pakistan society and government, which was q pre-cursor to many such ‘military rule’, over the course of its history. The Pakistan army had tasted blood and it was ‘here to stay, fight and hunt for its survival!’
Following Ayub’s rise to power, Pakistan became a sidekick to the NATO alliance in the cold war and a ‘mistress of the United States of America.’ With a fledging military behind him and a ‘super power’ beside, Ayub – visualised grandiose dreams of taking over Kashmir by military force with multiple diversion tactics aimed at India. In November 1964, a fierce skirmish took place in the Tithwal sector of J&K between Indian and Pakistani forces. It was a sign for things to come.

Early summer of 1965, Pakistan Army began to edge towards and encroach upon Indian posts in the Rann of Kutch. India responded by sending in a brigade level formation, following which led to clashes and even more fighting. The situation was getting out of hand which made Pakistan send in an entire infantry division along with two armoured regiments in close support. The situation came to boiling point when on April 24th 1965, Pakistan armoured and mechanised infantry attacked a post at Point 84 and the Border Security Force post (company strong) at Biar Bet, the next day, overrunning both the posts, with ease. The deception and diversion of Pakistan was still not clear, of the things to come in September!

On 3rd September 1965, Pakistan attacked India across the Beas River in the Chamb-Jaurian sector, the offensive plan of the Pakistan army was clear, to cut India from Kashmir. At the same time – airborne assault troops were airdropped ‘behind Indian lines’ across the international border in – Jammu and Kashmir along with large mix of ‘irregular and regular’ troops. With Indian infantry taking severe beating in Chamb-Jaurian and armoured also under heavy fire, thus, to put equal pressure on the Pakis, India launched counter-offensive on September 6th, across the International border in Punjab. It was led by heavy armour and infantry, objective being, the Lahore and Sialkot sectors. Within days, India made heavy in roads into Pakistan, inflicting massive armour casualty, with substantial losses to the Paki 6th armoured div formations. At the same time – the airborne assault by Pakistan into Jammu and Kashmir went horribly wrong, with most being rounded up and caught by local population-police and the army which made the Paki planners  to shelve rest of the plan of further ‘airborne strikes’!

By default, India did manage to incur damage to the morale and prestige of the Pakistan army, at the cost of a ‘mocked up’ cease-fire by world powers that be, leaving the outcome of the war in limbo.
With, Ayub Khan taking a beating down of sorts for the follies and fallacies of his general’s – Ayub gave way to Gen Yahya Khan – his successor and the military rule of Pakistan continued...

Pakistan army had been in power for almost 11 years now, since Field Marshal Ayub Khan’s takeover in 1958 and by 1969 – the public were disillusioned- demoralised- and discarded at home-hearth and abroad! With almost 3000 miles of Indian landmass right in the middle- dividing the East and West Pakistan – governing the two wings was proving to be a Herculean task  – along with added internal troubles of ethnic violence and communal infighting, the Bengali speaking East Pakistani civilian political activism was gaining momentum against the Punjabi/Urdu speaking west. In the dying months of 1970, the Awami League party of East Pakistan won all the seats to the National Assembly from the east, which led to Sheikh Mujib ur Rehman, its leader qualifying to form a civilian government under President Gen. Yahya Khan, by virtue of having more seats than Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party! The balance of power tilting towards the Bengalis was unacceptable to, Punjabi/Urdu speaking majority of West Pakistan in general and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, in particular. (West Pakistanis considered themselves martially superior to the Bengalis) Bhutto refused to hand over the reign of govt to Sheikh Mujib and “dissolved the National Assembly”, in perpetuity, imposed martial law and arrested Sheikh Mujib.

The action of the sitting Bhutto government, in turn made East Pakistan to revolt, which in turn, led Sheikh Mujib to call for a separate nation, independent of West Pakistan. The demand for separation by Awami League and the imposition of “martial law” saw a brutal army crackdown on innocent civilians of East Pakistan which was ‘one of the worst genocide and ethnic cleansing in a country, by its army on its own people!’ The actions of Yahya and his army in East Pakistan and the influx of refugees into India – made the Indian army to move into East Pakistan in 1971, following which led to the creation of Bangladesh and the ignominious defeat of Pakistan army resulting in capture of almost 93,000+ troops as PoW, within 13 days of war being declared!

The defeat of 1971 and the effects thereof, left Pakistan shattered, battered and brutally gang raped- the years following of which saw Pakistan return to civilian rule after a decade and half of army rule. With Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto assuming the supreme control of the half-baked state of Pakistan (west only) the path to normalcy was far from the horizon-and the deception of its army was looming round the corner. In 1976, Bhutto chose a relatively junior army commander over his seniors to be Chief of Army Staff- Gen Zia ul Haq, an armoured corps officer with equal amount of staff, command and instructional experience was not, quite a right choice by Bhutto, as he was to learn later, at the peril of his life. Zia had his share of controversy preceding him into GHQ. Apart from being 4 ranks junior to the senior most Lt Gen at the time of assuming command, Zia was almost court martialled from service as a Brig, when, in direct insubordination of international law and orders from Islamabad- Zia, himself assumed command of a Jordanian armoured division during the 1969 war with Israel- (at that time, serving a diplomatic tenure at Pakistan Embassy, in Amman). The Jordanian experience did hold him in good stead when he went out of his way to please the American’s during the Afghan war.
Zia, quite like his predecessors, civil and military went out of his way to be an ally with and serve as the ‘mistress’ of Washington in South Asia! The ‘double standards of Pakistan’ continued through the Zia years and it actually turned its focus to make it “(unofficial) official policy of Pakistan” during this time.

The Zia years are mostly known for the way Pakistan actually came of age as the ‘personal keep’ of the United States of America. Diplomatically, militarily and for all practical purpose of statecraft- Pakistan became ‘United States of America’s favourite whore’ and literally so, as time to come would prove. Zia opened Pakistani military bases to the US DoD, CIA, NSC and the DIA. USAID poured into Pakistan by ‘dime a dozen’. The biggest ‘coup de grace’ Zia did for the United States was opening of ‘training camps’ for Afghan mujahedeen’s fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan. Oil dollar was pouring in from Saudi Arabia via United States and Pakistan’s fate of doom changed the matrix of power for the Pakistani people. But behind all the shiny glitz and glamour which was visible to the world at large – was dissent among the army brass against United States in general and Zia in particular for ‘opening up bases and putting Pakistan’s sovereignty at stake and scuttling career prospects of so many generals, among many! Further, the mistrust among the senior commanders and the Chief of Joint Staff of the Pakistan Army also ex ISI chief and Zia’s ‘close confidant’ number two- Gen Akhtar, vitiated the atmosphere for all and sundry!

The battle lines were drawn and executed when in an ‘unsolved conspiracy’, Gen Zia ul Haq along with some of his top general’s (Gen Akhtar included) and the United States Ambassador to Pakistan – Arnold Raphael, was assassinated in a “C-130 Hercules crash” on August 17th 1988, while Zia was returning to Rawalpindi from a visit to HQ XXXI Corps, in Bahawalpur.

The duplicity, deception and double standard of the Pakistan military was there for all to see – not at the very moment – but exposed over time and time line of events, thereafter!

In a short period of time after Zia’s death and the Soviet retreat from Kabul – Pakistan bared its fangs, on its favourite whipping ‘buddy’- ‘India’. Even though it is widely believed that during “Zia years”, Pakistan actively and in secret – helped the “Khalistan separatist movement” in the Punjab in early 80’s, it never was substantially proved beyond reasonable doubt and with the movement itself being denounced and fought back by the people of Punjab, the Pakistan angle didn’t hold substantial ground! With the Soviet’s out of the way, Pakistan could concentrate on things to come. With American support waning (as is the case, when one is done with a mistress) and a huge army of ‘mujahedeen’s (non-state actors’) in the training camps- armed with US supplied weapons in excess (the one’s supplied by US as well as stolen by Pakistan, such as the Ojhri Camp ammo depot fire suggests) Pakistan’s ‘double game’ found a new taker and this time it was India! To begin with ‘tanzeems’(militant organisations) were set up within the existing training camps and in these camps were so trained ‘brainwashed’ young men from Kashmir to take to arms – for the so-called liberation of Kashmir (Azadi). Thus, giving rise to the continuing proxy-war by Pakistan in Kashmir. Followed by, terrorist attacks on harmless, unarmed civilians throughout rest of India. The long term- policy of deception and double standard of the Pakistan state was and is continuing to be used as a “weapon of state”. In the words of Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, COAS Pakistan Army, “The jihadists are strategic weapons of Pakistan.”

With the rise of cross border terrorism and militancy in the “Valle of Kashmir”, Pakistan’s ‘art of deception’ found a new ‘avatar’. In the summer of 1999, hordes of mercenaries, militants and regular troops of Paki army under direct command of ‘Paki army officers’ took over Indian posts in the winter of 1998-99 along the Line of Control in the Kargil region. Pakistan’s duplicitous act was exposed- in the summer of 1999 when Indian troops were fired upon while moving towards the Indian posts, vacated in the winter months, due to the inhospitable terrain and geography of the region. In the beginning, the intruders were assumed to be militants/terrorists- which Indian army was used to, in engaging elsewhere in Kashmir- it was only the sheer fire power rained down on Indian troops, blowing of ammo dumps in Kargil and missing army patrols- did the picture get clearer of the duplicity and level of involvement of the Pakistan army regulars and the state thereof. Since, independence – with each time India dealing with Pakistan on the battle field – the sheer number and the strategic brilliance of the generals of India and the determination of the Indian soldier has catapulted India to victory over the duplicity of Pakistan, time and again!
Since the end of Kargil war and Pakistan returning to military rule under Gen Pervez Musharraf (1999-2008) – the region has gone through some changes of far- reaching consequences. India and Pakistan, both have acquired nuclear weapons of substantial capability and use. Both the country “almost went to war” in 2002/03 post ‘terror attack on the Indian Parliament’ which emanated from the hallowed portals of GHQ, Pindi! Following which, Pakistani and Indian forces were amassed at the border, with no substantial incident of even a single bullet fired, barring the unceremonious removal of Lt Gen Kapil Vij, (India’s 2 [strike] Corps Commander) from command under American pressure, for ordering troops “too close to border”!

At the same time, Pakistan’s fortunes saw an upswing, after fall from grace following “1998 nuclear test to 1999 Pervez’s coup d’ état” and Pakistan returned to be ‘United State’s favourite mistress’ in the region due to the level of help and resource Pakistan extended to American led forces in avenging the 9/11 ‘terror’ attacks on US soil, which again has been proven to have been masterminded (substantially) by  Pakistani state and ‘non-state actors’ from within Pakistan,  against the “Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and within its own territorial borders”.
Pakistan bounced back, rather, in the words of Raja Mohan, (an America-phile and strategic affairs expert) “America muddled through”.
The “sagging mistress’s” economy got “botoxed” for a while – only to get “sucked out” in the recent months- post Osama Bin Laden’s dramatic killing by US Special Forces, in Abbotabad (May 2011) –smack in the middle of the Pakistan establishment’s source of (military) power, Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul as well as Frontier Force Regimental Centre, Abbotabad (prestigious infantry regiment)!

The Osama incident can be deemed as plain ‘unfortunate’ for ‘double gaming’ Pakistan.
The killing of Osama bin Laden and the ‘revenge killings’ in Pakistan by hardliners/extremists, has opened a Pandora’s box of poisonous worms for the Pakistani people, its gentry, radical clergy, over suspicious politicians, vicious intelligence agencies and a distrustful scotch drinking (haraam in Islam) army filled with double agents of USA! The outcome of the ‘Osama fiasco’ has the put Pakistan in a cauldron of turmoil. If reports emanating from international and Pakistani press be true – Pakistan’s “descent into chaos” is on the verge of completion. Today, Pakistan stands on the edge of its very existence it came to be so known! – Deemed as a ‘failed state’, a ‘nation which can’t be trusted’, economically on the verge of bankruptcy, (if aid it is supposed to receive doesn’t come through), of its own making and volition which is at its worst and a shaky civilian government with the support of a furious, civilian-phobic military in the wings! Coupled with all the above, Pakistan’s arrogance is not doing it any good for the future of its own existence!
Pakistan has seen four Chief’s of Army Staff ruling the country with complete authority for almost half its life till date and it continues to this day. General Headquarters, Rawalpindi (GHQ, Pindi) continues to be the power centre to the civilian rulers. The psyche of duplicity of Pakistan in general and its army, in particular, can be gauged from the fact of the promise of its existence- is based on, duplicitous propaganda and delusions of power coupled with deception, the founding fathers of Pakistan had to endure from imperial Britain!
The pain and reminders of suffering of partition and the ‘ignominious defeat of 1971’ keep the wheels of fortune for Pakistan army running and how? The military of Pakistan studies and teaches the one and only thing- to hate, bash and destroy India! But not for long! With changing world opinion and a ‘furious ally’ on its way to desert and destroy its ‘double agent’ “mistress”, Pakistan’s days are numbered and Pakistanis and its army are to be blamed for their “unofficial’ official policy of deception” and the impending doom they’ll be bringing upon themselves”!

The wheels of Pakistan’s “despicable and ‘double- edged’ master arm of ‘duplicity’, since, 1948 has rested with the Inter Service Intelligence directorate”! – Today, the ISI is a ‘super state’ within the Islamic Republic of Pakistan! Successive army chiefs of Pakistan, who themselves have become powerful, with each and every ‘army-chief ruler’ have kept, ‘their own man’ as DG-ISI and it’s this instrument of state policy- which has been instrument in framing policy, thereof! Without doubt, the age old adage – “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely” – could not have been any truer for Pakistan army and the Inter Service Intelligence!
The day isn’t far from near, when the world at large – and the powers that be, i.e. United States of America among others- launch an all out ‘war’ against Pakistan’s duplicity and the ISI- because the duality of its very existence will be out there for all to see- it’s not an analysts assumption, but the true fact of life for all and sundry- because we can’t trust Pakistan and its sat-raps (state and state sponsored non-state actors).
Duplicity in war is diversion- and duplicity in life is ‘fraud’! The rules of war have been written and re-written since time immemorial and it’s changing with the course of time. War itself will continue to be fought and used as an instrument of state policy! With world powers that be – closing in on Pakistan and realising its surreptitious duplicity of its state policy, days for Pakistan’s very existence stands threatened from outside and within!

Where ever there is man- there is conflict and with conflict escalating- there will be war!

Tribute to a Hero!

Last salute: The ‘doyen’ of Indian helicopter bids farewell
 Homage:
Time is temporary- our life is forever- in this life or thereafter!
– Author!
Air Commodore Sudhindra Kumar Majumdar was born on the night of 7/8th October 1927 to noted barrister S. K. Majumdar and Smt Jyoti Majumdar of Patna, Bihar (British India). At the height of the Second World War- in 1945 he chose to join the Royal Indian Air Force, receiving his ‘flying wings’ in 1948. Air Commodore Majumdar, began his flying career with Royal Indian Air Force, (RIAF) flying, Hurricanes and Spitfires – in the halcyon days of the fledging Air Force of newly independent India.
As a Pilot Officer and Flying Officer, S.K. Majumdar flew the Spitfire and Hurricane in the first few years of service with RIAF and IAF, (the word Royal being dropped in 1950) prior to selection for helicopters in 1953. When India decided to induct the Sikorsky S-55 helicopter for the IAF-
As a Flight Lieutenant, he was selected to be sent to the United States along with Flight Lieutenant Neil Todd, for training, on the selected type for induction into the Indian Air Force.

In time, the first S-55 (tail number- IZ-648) arrived in Bombay on 19th March, 1955 and so was born “104 Helicopter Flight” of the Indian Air Force! As is well documented by defence historians and in the annals of Indian Air Force, in particular, “the very first helicopter flight over Indian skies” took place on 24th March, 1954 over Bombay. S-55 (IZ648) piloted by Flt Lt SK Majumdar- following which the helicopter was ferried to Palam, Delhi the next day, 25th March, 1954 and further trials continued, which went on till the 27th of March, flown by Flt Lt SK Majumdar.
While the helicopter flight was still under conversion – it received its “first operational mission”, the very next day. A Search And Rescue (SAR) mission of the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, who en-route to the ‘Tilpat ranges’, near Delhi, to witness an IAF- fire power demonstration was caught up in a massive traffic jam heading towards Tilpat on 28th March, the next day. For, “One-Oh-Four” and Flt Lt SK Majumdar along with Flt Lt AM Panicker (engineering officer) it was an order- which had to be carried out “at all cost” –

The mission was carried out successfully – with Prime Minister Nehru located en route in the massive milieu of crowd- (tongas-carts- cars included), the S-55 (piloted by Flt Lt SK Majumdar and co-pilot, Flt Lt Panicker) landing on an open patch of the road, rescuing the PM from the traffic jam and arriving at Tilpat safely. The mission of 28th March, 1954 was the “Red-Letter” for the IAF and “One-Oh-Four”, in particular, scripting the pioneer ops for “Pioneer Rotarians”!

In due course of time, Flt Lt Majumdar, would go on to command “One-Oh-Four” not once, but twice, a rare honour of sort! To Air Cmde Majumdar’s credit- an entire generation of helicopter pilots in India were trained by him, almost singlehandedly.

Apart from being an ace helicopter pilot with “zero-incident” flying record to boast of till he hung his boots in 1978. Air Cmde Majumdar was an equally dare-devil pilot, who knew his limitations and for whom, safety was paramount-in the air or ground! He would at times, to test his own self and inspire those around, while flying fighters, would fly in and out of ‘both side open’ hangars and execute his manoeuvres (doing a ‘Touch and Go’ or ‘flying by’ from one end to the other- 2 mtrs from ground) with exceptional ease- while keeping in mind, the safety of his aircraft and men on ground - It was a different day, age and time; today a pilot could face a CoI or even be Court Martialed, for such bravado ‘show-off’!

Such was his expertise; at handling the helicopter- he executed “perfect landings” on hilltops in the NEFA sector, with just three bricks as makeshift “helipad” as well as on rooftops! He indeed was a ‘pioneer’!

Apart from his flying skills and ‘cautious bravado’, Air Cmde Majumdar, was an equally cautious person- on ground and could be brutally ‘no-nonsense’ when required. An incident from back in time revealed by his nephew and noted Aviation/ Defence Analyst, Abhijit Bhattacharyya, shows another side to the Air Commodore’s persona...

As a Flt Lt posted in Ambala in the 50’s, driving to work- an Air Force lorry, driving ahead of him would just not give him ‘right of way’ – no amount of honking and flickering his headlights would help, nor would his efforts of trying to overtake from the other side- an excellent driver, notwithstanding, would help. Coupled with the fact, the ‘lorry driver’ would cut him off dangerously every time he’d try to overtake... Miffed at the lorry drivers’ behaviour, he finally over took the ‘chap’ at the slight gap he could find and stopped short of the lorry. Getting off his vehicle, the 6’ 2” tall strapping Flt Lt ordered the driver to disembark from his vehicle and gave him (lorry driver) a dressing down on ‘rules of the road’ adding a threat of Court Martial as well. Such was his way of dealing with things- the ‘lorry driver’ became apologetic for his actions- which made uncle let go of him, with a stern warning, no doubt!” (Not to be misconstrued for ‘road rage’)

As a Group Captain, SK Majumdar served, Chief Instructor at the (then) Jodhpur based, Air Force Flying College, (predecessor to Air Force Academy, Dundigul) some of his cadets, trained under him, went on to charter dizzying heights in their own flying career- including, ex-Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major and Wg Cdr BS Singh Deo- President of the Bell Helicopter Company, in India, and many such stalwarts received their wings under Air Cmde Majumdar.

In 1971, Gp Capt SK Majumdar attended the prestigious National Defence College in New Delhi and thereafter, with 30 years of service to the Indian Air Force, retired from service in 1977 at the rank of Air Commodore.

Post retirement, Air Cmde SK Majumdar continued his association with the aviation world and helicopters, in particular, almost till the very end. His knowledge on aviation, world affairs, and military at large and current affairs was impeachable. A teacher par extraordinary- sitting and talking to him was like a ‘drug’ of sort. His humour would put any one at ease, at the very first meeting! Meticulous with everything he did- be it, marking and underling news clipping (which he felt important) from the newspaper- to teaching his grandchildren to drive- an excellent cook- he preferred doing things on his own and not be dependent on others- one bit! Fiercely proud of his ‘naam-namak and nishan’- Simply, seeing him walk with his ‘ram-rod’ straight gait and taut face would be a sight to behold!
He will be dearly missed!

On the night of 19th/20th July, 2011- Air Commodore SK Majumdar- “First military helicopter pilot of India”, “Doyen of the Indian Air Force”, “Father of One-Oh-Four Helicopter Sqd, (Fire Birds)” bid us his last good bye- after a semi-prolonged illness!
Air Commodore Majumdar leaves behind his beloved
Wife- Uma Majumdar
Eldest son/daughter in law- Dr Subir and Sapna Majumdar
Daughter/son in law- Dr Bhabani and Dr Utpal Mukherjee
Youngest son/daughter in law- Ranabir and Ishani Majumdar
Grand Daughter/ Grandson in law- Dr Shyama and Nishith Agarwal
Granddaughters- Manjira Majumdar, Srimayee Mukherjee and Ananya Majumdar!

Air commodore Majumdar’s demise leaves a void- which can never be filled within the Aviation community at large, the Indian Air Force in particular and our family!
With calls, messages and ‘in attendance’ floral tributes from one and all, serving and retired officers of Indian Air Force included- Air Commodore SK Majumdar- received a “send off” – “Befitting a King”!

In this life we make the mark- which holds us in remembrance forever and thereafter as well! Air Commodore S K Majumdar- The lovable father- doting grandfather- a guru to so many amongst us- His memory in our hearts will hold out as long as we live our life and tell our children the story of the man – who fathered ‘helicopter aviation’ in India!

To the man we love so dearly- “missing him with joy in our hearts and a smile on our face-in his memory will uphold his deeds”!
If we could do our bit towards the ‘fouj’ he served and ‘aviation’ he so loved- it would be a “Bravo Zulu” from him – wherever he is!

Independence and all that matters

It’s a freshly rain washed 14th August morning, a day away from celebrating our Independence day, "Desh pukare jab sabko" plays along on my iTunes, as I read through the headlines of the various newspapers on the web. I can't but help notice a general perception of distrust and disillusionment towards the establishment of the day amongst the vast cross section of people in India. Good-bad- or ugly, we are no judge or jury! It is history that judges the actions of men through the passage of time and its history alone which has taught us to stand up for what we believe in.

Years ago, back in history, our forefathers were made to believe that Independence from British suzerainty was possible and it was this belief which led to people from across presidencies- princely states-towns and gaons to stand up- to root out the colonial powers of the day. However, the long struggle prolonged, resulting in which India as an entity came along, and we achieved independence, in letter and spirit. With independence came the demarcation of boundaries being drawn right down the middle, leading to the creation of West and East Pakistan. Loyalties were tested, challenged and cussed out. Friends turned to enemies and neighbours added fuel to fire. The birth of a divided nation saw the birth of dived loyalties and distrust among one and all. It was not the best of time and we were shaken down to our roots. A united nation divided at heart and the mind was lost to the divide.

The British left India shaken and stirred and it was quite easy for a divided India to be rattled down by vicious attacks mastered by the very neighbour-friend it held so close- that Pakistan, rather Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s last wish was not to be fulfilled was duly ensured by some equal amount of cajoling-holding our ground and standing up to defend what happened to come under the tricolour. Had it not so been so history would surely be poking fun at us, today!

The idea of Pakistan did pre-date Pakistan itself and had been the moot point of its genesis. But the power struggle following Jinnah’s untimely, (pre-meditated death) opened a whole new Pandora’s Box that none were able to fathom and understand. The October, 27th 1958 coup by Gen.Ayub Khan was the last straw of beginning of doom for Pakistan. In turn the Army came to stay and the saga continues, in some way or the other.

In terms of our belief, of who we wish to and want to be, continues to haunt us. The shaken and stirred India, of 1947, continues to get rattled and hassled at frequent intervals at the will of the rattler. Whatever is the perception of various regional sat-raps, political affiliations notwithstanding, the underlying dilemma of India lies with our lack of coherent policies towards our own people?

We might be a geo-political super power with a nuclear arsenal to boast of along with being right on top, in fields of medicine, science and technology and other such fields of economic growth in the region. But a country is as strong as the unity of the people and weakest at where the unity shrinks. Be it the army, civil society or populace, the country’s unity is not the way it is projected and the aggressor very well knows the weakest links, thereof.

India’s chequered history since time immemorial through independence and now is proof enough of how each time we’ve been battered, bruised, raped and murdered for centuries and the saga continues, unabated, albeit on a different level.

Through the life and times of a nation, comes a time of satisfactory level of comfort and through sheer diligence only do people realise to achieve the goals of collective hard work. It is this, the time that is, now for us to let go of the immediate past. Redeem a solemn oath of allegiance, not to any book-or god, but to each other and to our flag! But in order to prosper, we need to wear the ‘kavaach’, the shield and never ever forget the belief, of who we are.

It is important that while we strengthen our roots and stand up for one another-in the literal sense of it and in spirit. We must never give in to false fallacies of hope and peace- a bloodied nose is better than no nose!! On the eve of our 63rd Independence Day, I hope of a better year for the country, I pray and wish, Indians- would stand up for themselves as Indians.
Jai Hind!
